Do slimming teas really work? An analysis of their truth and potential risks.
Does slimming tea actually work?
Can drinking tea help with weight loss? I've reviewed relevant research papers and consulted many teachers and elders, but unfortunately, the conclusion is that there's no necessary link between drinking tea and weight. Does that mean drinking tea is useless? Not necessarily. If you change the keywords and search for "tea and fat," you'll find even more results. Tea can indeed reduce fat, but it doesn't reduce body fat; it reduces blood lipids.
Body fat is subcutaneous fat, while blood lipids are fat in blood vessels. Although they are essentially the same, their amounts differ significantly. Body fat accounts for 98% of total body fat weight, while blood lipids only account for 2%. This is actually quite reasonable, because if there were too much blood lipid, the blood vessels would be filled with fat, not blood.
Understanding this makes it easier to understand why drinking tea only reduces fat, not weight. Because tea can only reduce blood lipids, and blood lipids at most only decrease by two percentage points; even if you reduced all of them, the reduction wouldn't be significant.
However, while drinking tea won't lead to weight loss, it has far more significant benefits. High blood lipids can lead to many cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. Lowering blood lipids can help prevent many diseases and even prolong life.
Therefore, Traditional Chinese Medicine often describes tea with the phrase, "Long-term consumption leads to a light body and longevity." This is something worth pondering.
"Long-term consumption" means you shouldn't be impatient; you must develop a habit to see results.
"Light body" refers to the fact that drinking tea can reduce weight (there is a certain conversion relationship between blood lipids and body fat; if blood lipid levels are insufficient, some body fat can be converted into blood lipids, so drinking tea does have a slight weight-loss effect). At the same time, because the body feels better after drinking tea, you'll feel lighter.
"Longer aging" means that drinking tea helps prevent aging. Who ages easily? People with high blood lipids and high cholesterol are most prone to aging, and tea has the strongest blood lipid-lowering function. With healthier blood, a person naturally ages more slowly.
In just six simple words, the method and effects of using tea for weight loss are perfectly summarized. In other words, tea is a good thing for longevity, and although its effect on weight loss is relatively mild, it can be consumed in moderation as a healthy beverage.
However, it's important to note that not all teas are suitable for consumption. There is a type of "tea" that is actually a medicine, yet it's marketed as "tea" for weight loss – this is weight-loss tea.
I have a particularly strong memory of weight-loss tea. I remember 20 years ago, when I was interning in the gastroenterology department of a hospital. That year, a new weight-loss tea was launched on the market, and during that period, there were many female patients with diarrhea in the outpatient clinic. At the time, I found it strange because there wasn't an epidemic that year, and it wasn't the peak season for diarrhea. Later, as I saw more patients, I gradually figured out the reason. Many of these female patients with diarrhea had the same experience: they had bought similar weight-loss teas and consumed them for a period of time.
At that time, I exclaimed: This isn't tea; it's clearly a laxative!
Weight loss tea isn't actually tea; it's "medicine" with added tea leaves. I've studied the ingredient lists of several generations of weight loss teas and found that the earliest main ingredient was a laxative, followed by diuretics, then fat blockers, appetite suppressants, carbohydrate suppressants, and later, stimulants. This evolution basically summarizes the 20-year history of weight loss tea in China.
These over-the-counter drugs, which even doctors dare not prescribe casually, have been sold like hotcakes under the guise of "tea" for the past 20 years. I truly "admire" the "genius" who came up with the concept of "weight loss tea," and I genuinely worry about the women who drink it long-term.
Some say, "Who cares if it's medicine or tea, as long as it helps me lose weight!" Can weight loss tea really help you lose weight? Yes, very quickly! But is it good for the body? No!
Not to mention that excessive diarrhea can cause malnutrition, dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, and other health problems, the most crucial point is that laxatives damage intestinal function, leading to dependence, just like taking drugs. Once the body becomes dependent on laxatives, habitual constipation develops after discontinuing them, making normal bowel movements impossible without them. This leads to a vicious cycle of laxative use, becoming increasingly difficult to treat. Therefore, in clinical practice, doctors use laxatives with extreme caution and rarely prescribe them for extended periods.
Would you still be willing to consume such a dangerous weight-loss tea?
Finally, I'd like to mention a new type of weight-loss drink: L-carnitine.
If you've seen its advertisement and are considering buying it to try, I advise you not to waste your money.
L-carnitine, simply put, is a catalyst for fat breakdown; fat needs it to break down. But does drinking more L-carnitine accelerate fat breakdown? Theoretically, yes, but in reality, it's wishful thinking.
First, the L-carnitine you ingest won't be absorbed into your body fat. Second, most people don't lack L-carnitine; cases of L-carnitine deficiency are rare, occurring only in a few individuals due to genetics, chronic kidney failure, or other special reasons. Furthermore, L-carnitine can be obtained from everyday meat consumption, and the body's L-carnitine levels are naturally regulated. When insufficient, it will automatically accumulate in the body, eliminating the need for supplementation. So why waste your money?
