Qi deficiency can also explain why some people gain weight easily, even from drinking water, while others can eat whatever they want without gaining weight. Simply put, those who gain weight easily are due to qi deficiency, resulting in impaired digestion and the inability to burn excess fat. As for those who can eat whatever they want without gaining weight, it doesn't mean they are perfect; it could be the other extreme—excessive qi and blood deficiency (people with blood deficiency are prone to being thin).

Qi and Blood Balance: To lose weight, first replenish qi.

What to do about qi deficiency? There is only one method: replenishing qi. There are two types of qi replenishment: medicinal supplementation and dietary supplementation. Generally, formal medicinal supplementation is only used when the condition progresses to the stage of illness. For ordinary obese individuals, dietary supplementation combined with some qi-replenishing herbs is sufficient.

There are many qi-replenishing foods; some common ones are listed below.

Staple foods: White rice, brown rice, millet, japonica rice, glutinous rice, oats, potatoes, sweet potatoes, corn, chestnuts, soybeans, black beans, mung beans, red beans.

Vegetables: Lentils, carrots, shiitake mushrooms, spinach, garland chrysanthemum, cauliflower, cabbage, rapeseed, mustard greens, pumpkin, water chestnuts, lotus root, squash, peas, green beans, tomatoes.

Fungi: Black fungus, white fungus, shiitake mushrooms, winter mushrooms.

Fruits: Grapes, lemons, papayas, strawberries, plums, apples, olives, longans, lychees, cherries, guavas, citrus fruits, bayberries, peaches, apricots, oranges, figs, loquats, sugarcane, cantaloupe.

Meat and eggs: Beef, rabbit meat, pork belly, chicken, eggs.

Fish and shrimp: Silver carp, yellow croaker, flounder, shrimp, crab, turtle, eel.

Others: Rock sugar, brown sugar, maltose, honey, garlic, coriander, ginger, scallions, fennel, sesame oil.

While all these foods can replenish qi, some are high in calories, such as white rice, glutinous rice, rock sugar, brown sugar, maltose, honey, and sesame oil. They are not suitable for weight loss and should be consumed sparingly.

It's also important to note that those with qi deficiency should avoid drinking large amounts of water. According to Western medicine, generally, the more water you drink, the better (but not to the point of water intoxication). However, from the perspective of traditional Chinese medicine, excessive water intake may damage yang qi in those with qi deficiency.
