Weight Loss for Women: The Fat-Burning Effects of Yoga and Aerobics and a Selection Guide
Can Yoga Really Help You Lose Weight?
In addition, there are two other aerobic exercises that are very helpful for fat loss: yoga and aerobics. One is slow, the other fast, making them a wonderful combination for fat loss and a popular exercise method among many girls.
Many girls have asked me whether yoga can help them lose weight. They find yoga movements very slow and worry that this won't be effective.
Indeed, from a purely calorie-burning perspective, yoga doesn't have much effect. Studies have shown that even with higher-intensity yoga styles, an hour of practice burns a maximum of 293 kilojoules (70 kilocalories), far less "cost-effective" than half an hour of jogging.
However, it would be too hasty to conclude that yoga has no fat-burning effect. I've practiced yoga before, and after my first class, I had back pain and couldn't sleep well all night. After practicing for a while, I gradually got used to it. However, after each session, my whole body felt like I had completed a long-distance run, a feeling I believe many women experience after yoga.
This fatigue is caused by maintaining certain postures for extended periods. These postures affect the ligaments, muscles, fat, and even bones, ultimately stimulating metabolism. However, this stimulation is mostly beneficial, accelerating metabolism—simply put, increasing basal metabolic rate. As mentioned earlier, a higher basal metabolic rate means increased calorie expenditure.
Therefore, yoga's effect on fat loss is reflected in its metabolic rate. While it may not seem as direct as jogging, if practiced correctly, yoga can be quite effective for weight loss. Yoga also has shaping and psychological benefits, making its weight loss benefits multifaceted.
Currently, there are many popular forms of yoga. When choosing, don't be fixated on different styles; as long as you practice diligently and safely, you can reap the benefits of yoga for your body.
If yoga is about slow and steady progress, then aerobics is about fast and efficient workouts.
Aerobics is a popular new aerobic exercise for weight loss in recent years. Actually, it's not that new. Back in the 1990s, I watched several American TV shows where many women would jump around in front of the TV at certain intervals – that was the kind of exercise they did back then.
Aerobics can be seen as an upgraded version of jump rope, transforming the relatively fixed and stiff movements of jump rope into a comprehensive full-body workout, which does have a good training effect. At the same time, because aerobics is particularly rhythmic, it's more fun and easier than jogging or brisk walking. In terms of calorie burning, aerobics is also a good choice for those trying to lose weight.
For women in China, I would recommend aerobics even more. It requires relatively little space, and all you need is a computer to play aerobics videos and follow along. Once you've learned it, you don't even need a computer anymore. It's suitable for most families and single people.
